Small Moments

Most of the time in parenting I find myself wondering how the time passes so quickly. It's difficult to be observant of the small, little changes that occur. Often I'll be out shopping or in line waiting for my coffee and someone will say, "I remember when mine where that small!" and they will have that faraway look remembering their early parenting days.

This week Stella made one of those small changes and I actually have been able to notice it. Her art became literal. One day, literally, she drew a picture of herself and now she's obsessed with these "self-portraits." It's amazing to see; just two weeks ago her coloring consisted of scribbles & circles & lots of different colors. Now she uses a black sharpie and draws herself, her friends, her siblings. Here are a few samplings. . .

Life is full at three years old

Stella is blossoming - learning about going to school, about being a flower girl, about being a big sister, about reading, about princesses, about swimming. So many things happening in Stella's life - yet when I ask her what she'd like to do, she almost always says "stay home." Here's a little glimpse of her world at three and a half.

Three Years Old

"I didn't turn pink today."

The thing about turning three is that it is simply an irresistible age. You can only be happy about it. We've had a week of festivities to celebrate Stella's third birthday or, as she puts it, "two is over." Stella is all about twirl skirts, princesses, dancing, singing and dollies. Oh, and being naked!

This afternoon as I was getting her dressed she looked at her skin and said, "I didn't even turn pink today!" - for those of you who know about the darling book Pinkalicious, you know what she is talking about.

Scroll down to see more fun with a great group of family and friends...Thank you everyone for celebrating with us!

Bella Bean is what we call her. . . .

. . . . and at almost three, she is quite the independent one. She observes. She craves being with her brother, and then asks him to "give me space." She loves dollies and princesses and race cars and bunnies. She makes up long stories about how they get into trouble and then need to be rescued; she is the mother who rescues them. She's deliberate; last night in the bath she wrapped the John Deere Tractor Driver (a toy left over from her brother) several times to get him just right in the washcloth; each time he slipped off, she would just start over, no sign of frustration. She is so sweet -- and she is growing up incredibly fast!

Little Red Dress

A little red dress with red shoes to match; as her Mom I reveled in ample opportunities to dress Stella and her brother for holiday festivities.

Oh what fun!

Everywhere we went included celebrations -- San Francisco, our holiday Christmas party (where Santa showed up!), the Nutcracker and best of all, Christmas morning at home. Hard to believe it's already come and gone, but luckily I got a few good snaps to remember this holiday season.

Stella's 9 Month Photo Shoot

Nine months officially marks the beginning of Stella's time on the outside being longer than on the inside. So I decided to capture her: two small bottom teeth budding, legs eager to walk, mouth ready to taste everything (including sand!), fingers able to grab small things. My little pea no longer fits in her pod!

My heart still breaks a little each time I think about the day we left Bainbridge Island. Such a wonderful summer, such a wonderful place and perhaps most importantly, it is where Stella was conceived and born. Where she spent her first hours, days, weeks and months.

This entry captures our move from the pacific northwest to the sunny beaches of California. Stella and Gibson...we hope that we've done you right by moving here!
